The somewhat overlooked favorite Marvel series The Runaways, is going to be adapted to TV and “air” on Hulu network. Deadline reported that the Eisner award-winning series about a group of teenaged super-powered kids with less than perfect parents is the latest show in Marvels attempt to rule all media. The comic book based series begins as a small group of six teens chill, while their well-to-do parents are having their yearly charity event. Bored, the six decide to spy on the adults only to witness a very shocking ritual, and discover their parents are “the Pride”, a criminal group of mob bosses, time-travelers, dark wizards, and you name it.
Originally written by Saga creator Brian K. Vaughan with art by Adrian Alphona, the series debuted back in 2003. The too popular to fail story about six diverse kids has been on and off for several years after that, it’s engaging story seems to keep bringing new comic book readers into the series. Mostly dormant since 2009 the series did get a small reboot in 2015 during Marvel’s Secret Wars crossover, featuring a new cast set on Battleworld but if you are interested in the tale we would suggest starting with the first series.
The Runaways is being adapted for the small screen by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. “I’m a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn’t be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life,” said Schwartz. Added Savage, “Josh and I can’t wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu.” No word on when to expect the series, the Dateline article indicated “The order is for a pilot plus additional scripts with an eye toward a full-season green light.”
